This Chapel Hill, NC based position (80% time/30 hours per week) will provide technical assistance on the following two areas: 1) clinical support to expand high quality second trimester (PAC and induced abortion) service provision and 2) the systematic review of clinical studies on abortion and contraception and the integration into Ipas clinical guidance: Clinical Updates in Reproductive Health www.ipas.org/clinicalupdates and www.ipas.org/actualizacionesclinicas.


The Senior Medical Advisor is a critical member of the Quality of Care team within the Technical Excellence Department at Ipas. This global technical leader will urgently work to improve health outcomes for women and girls through supporting access to safe and effective comprehensive abortion care. S/he uses clinical judgment to advise the organization on clinical standards, trends in the scientific and medical literature and strategic opportunities for innovation in comprehensive abortion care (CAC), including contraception.


This position works with other technical colleagues at Ipas to synthesize and disseminate evidence-based strategies, clinical guidance and implementation tools for the integration of comprehensive abortion care (CAC) into public and private health systems. This position works closely with the Medical Director and Quality of Care Director to support Ipas country programs in Africa, Asia and Latin America. In collaboration with other US-based technical and program support staff, this position will implement and adhere to evidence-based clinical guidance and promote improved access to comprehensive abortion care that is available, acceptable, accessible, and of good quality (AAAQ).


The Senior Medical Advisor position provides technical assistance to Ipas country teams as needed and supports the design and implementation of quality program interventions (trainings, advocacy and community engagement) in sexual and reproductive health care. This position supports the design and review of clinical training tools and job aids used by health workers and synthesized innovative best practices for rapid implementation at scale.


Responsibilities include reviewing and sharing Ipas clinical guidance (www.ipas.org/clinical updates), program results through the collaborating with Ipas program implementation teams internationally. A strong background in implementation science and/or clinical research will support the successful documentation and scale-up of programmatic innovations at Ipas and the larger reproductive health field and will facilitate work with the Technical Innovations and Evidence Department.


Direct clinical practice, outside of Ipas, is welcome and strongly encouraged. This 80% position is eligible for full-time Ipas benefits including professional development opportunities.



  • Identify and incorporates trends from the global sexual and reproductive health field and knowledge of published medical and scientific literature
  • Leverages clinical and training experience with second trimester abortion care to support the deliberate integration of second trimester services (PAC and induced) into Ipas programs and among partners
  • Contributes to the development, review and implementation of national standards and guidelines for comprehensive abortion care
  • Identifies and disseminates clinical technical innovation, lessons learned, and best practices within and across Ipas country programs
  • Provides external leadership, representation, and advocacy as required at national, regional and international conferences and events
  • Provides clinical support in comprehensive abortion care through the development, evaluation and documentation of quality improvement programs that promote a “safety culture” approach to adverse event monitoring, encourage health worker team communication to improve safety outcomes and facilitate provider networking and continuous learning

  • Demonstrates respect, effective communication and conflict resolution in working relationships with agency coworkers, external colleagues and stakeholders



  • Advanced degree in medicine (Family Physician or OB/GYN)
  • Ability to provide direct medical practice
  • 5+ years’ experience in reproductive health care including direct provision of abortion and contraception care, a focus on quality improvement, and experience applying scientific evidence to training programs
  • Clinical experience providing second trimester abortion care, including D&E, mifepristone and misoprostol.
  • Skilled in interpreting and adapting scientific clinical information for practical training and field application in low resource settings
  • Experience with methods of systematic review and grading of clinical evidence
  • Experience in reproductive health care service delivery, quality improvement, and health systems strengthening.
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating clinical training related to reproductive health service delivery
  • Demonstrated leadership, strategic planning and technical skills in areas of responsibility and focus for this position
  • English fluency and strong written communications skills, including history of scientific publications.
  • Ability to represent Ipas internally and externally
  • Ability to travel 20%



  • Practicing clinician or ability to practice clinically in state of residence; board certification where applicable
  • Research and clinical training experience (Family Planning Fellowship or equivalent)
  • Master’s in Public Health or a related field
  • Project management experience
  • Experience working with Ministries of Health; health professional organizations and international stakeholders
  • Strong advocacy and public speaking skills
  • Experience working in collaborative, multi-cultural teams
  • Fluency in French, Spanish or Portuguese
