The Communications Media Advisor ensures publications/broadcasts and coordinates all media activities that will create the right environment leading to the reform of abortion law. This position is responsible for monitoring and countering all anti-choice activism that frustrates efforts at reforming abortion law. The incumbent in this position works with all Ipas country partners to generate much-needed support and raise voices that will push for the reform of abortion as well as create platform for collaboration between these voices and the media.


• Coordinates media activities, training and workshops to increase the number of journalists who specialize in doing reports
• Tracks newspaper and online publications to ascertain the quality of news reports; places relevant stories on Ipas Global Media Tracking List, e-mailing publications to partners and relevant individuals
• Organizes Reproductive Health cluster meetings every year and provides all year round media coverage of activities organized by Ipas partners to ensure that the media and partners bond; verifies that no contradictions in messages are passed at meetings to ensure that all groups share the same goals
• Provides year-round monitoring of anti-choice activism and a view to counter negative publicity that may emanate by preparing the media for coverage ahead of time; mobilizes partners to attend such meetings and discuss security measures
• Syndicates stories in the local media through the Network of Reproductive Health Journalists on Ipas activities and developments in other countries where abortion laws have been reformed
• In consultation with the Country Director, assists international NGOs and other organizations that work in the area of Reproductive Health to develop strategies for working with the media
• Develops drama pieces and community media strategy, fine tunes radio jingles when necessary, and stands in for policy unit when the work load is heavy

• Communicates with Policy and Advocacy Staff to discuss anti Choice issues and send relevant media publications
• Works with Officials of Women’s Groups such to organize media coverage, selects media house and journalists that cover relevant activities; gives guidance on the kind of messages to be delivered at events; assesses the quality of messages delivered at events based on media reports
• Works with International NGOs to determine how best to relate with local media; creates access to trained journalists and gives feedback from journalists on how to make relationships with NGOs better
• Communicates with government officials to counter negative stories in the media and incorrect information by anti-choice groups/individuals; determines government positions/decisions on relevant matters and issues
• Works with associates, managers, directors, and other departments in reference to reports, planning, policies, and procedures when necessary



• Bachelor’s degree in related field
• 3-4 years’ experience
• Must possess strong working knowledge of trending industry topics, events and media happenings
• Must have good editing, writing, communication and event management skills
• MS Office Suite proficient
• Ability to travel 50%



• 5 to 7 years of relevant experience
• Fluency in English
• Experience working in a non-profit organization
